Topic: Why avocado toast is overrated

Avocado toast is arguably one of the most American foods known to man, and yet, time and time again, it still makes our country look bad. Avocado toast is a very simple and well-known recipe, and I am here to tell you why this dish is severely overrated.

Most of our country is unable to experience it

According to Happy Sprout, "Avocados can only grow in warm weather and subhumid climates, primarily tropical and Mediterranean temperatures that stay warm year-round. Being a tropical plant, the avocado tree hates growing in any temperature below 50 degrees Fahrenheit." Avocados have seasonal times like most fruits, but the issue with the avocado is that it must be transported in a refrigerated area, which inherently drives the cost of the avocados through the roof. This means that the lower middle class and struggling families cannot afford to have the "luxury" of avocado toast.

It is insanely basic.

Avocados are a highly nutritious fruit. They have many different healthy fats and a great set of healthy vitamins that can aid a healthy diet. But when you combine two super basic foods like the pumpkin spice latte, it leads to a narrative. But in this case, the narrative makes total sense, as it is one of the most basic foods ever invented. Avocado toast is so simple, that it feels as if it is only a matter of time before everyone starts hating on it, as it is only two simple ingredients that have controversy lingering around them. Look at what an avocado toast is—just a slice of bread and avocado. Now, restaurants will normally make these concoctions better by adding tomatoes, eggs, or jalapenos, but then you essentially have salsa on bread.

It costs an arm and a leg.

Avocado toast consumers love to point out how this is a complete meal, but I can speak for all when I say this "complete meal is not worth the heavy price tag it carries. According to theladders.com, "Last year, Square, a tech company that helps businesses process credit card payments, calculated that Americans are spending close to $900,000 per month on avocado toast." In that same article, it was estimated that the average price for avocado toast is 11 dollars in the United States. This is not only outrageous but also a borderline scam for some guacamole on a slice of bread. Avocados are great food, but there is no reason to overhype them to the point of charging 11 dollars for a slice of bread. Not only that, but avocados are simply not enough to carry this dish for what it's worth.

Superfood that isn't quite so super

Avocado toast is a decent option, but I would like to bring up the fact that there are many different foods that are extremely healthy that don't get the same credit that avocado toast gets. For example, fish is one of the healthiest foods that we, as humans, eat on a regular basis. It has a great protein content and omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent heart disease. Another example of an inexpensive healthy food is Greek yogurt and fruit. This is the definition of a balanced meal with protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and much more.

Living a healthy life is something that every American should strive for. That being said, there are many foods you can add to your diet to become a much healthier individual. Avocado toast should not be at the top of your list when many healthy foods exist without the price tag avocado toast carries. My call to action to all avocado toast enthusiasts is to step outside of your comfort zone and try a new healthy food and a new healthy combination.
